The Good Woman of South Dagon_Standbild002

The elderly but by no means frail Daw Tin May Oo is a no-nonsense member of Myanmar’s ruling party NLD serving in Yangon’s South Dagon Township. She supports her neighbours and is good to her friends and especially her cats – whether they like it or not. But beneath her hilarious ‘tough love’ approach she embodies the strength and compassion of Myanmar’s civil society.

Win Thu Myo (27) grew up in a village in Natmauk Township in Magway region in central Myanmar. After studying cinematography and drama at the National University of Arts and Culture in Yangon he began working as an editor of music videos and shorts, also appearing as an actor. He enrolled at YFS in 2016 where he directed his portrait of a resilient couple and their garbage-recycling family, Through Thick and Thin in his first year. His second year project The Good Woman of South Dagon was joint winner of the 2017 Goethe Institut Myanmar Documentary Ruby Award. He is currently teaching at the National University of Arts and Culture (NUAC) in Mandalay.
