Love & Other Matters

Synopsis

Love & Other Matters introduces us to seven different LGBTQIA+ people living in Myanmar today. A warm and humorous documentary about the most human aspect of us all: the desire to love, be loved and be accepted.

Director's Biography

Writer and filmmaker Su Su Hlaing was born in Yangon in 1989. Her articles for a wide variety of independent magazines and radio in Myanmar and abroad have often focused on social issues, women and children, and she has carried this interest over into her screenwriting and filmmaking. She encountered a boy like the character of Yarzar in To School whilst visiting relatives in the area where the film went on to be made and was inspired to write the script about him. She has since gone on to direct a number of films, particularly for YFS’ production arm, including Love and Other Matters (2015), a portrait of seven members of Myanmar’s LGBTI community which travelled to festivals in Thailand and Vietnam among others; the Wathann Film Festival Best Documentary award-winning Opium Farmer (2018), and a film about foster care for Terres des hommes entitled No Place Like Home (2020). Su Su Hlaing is currently working on an ethnographic documentary about the dating culture of the Pa-O ethnic group entitled Dating in the Dark.
