Synopsis

Every day, fourteen-year-old Pho Htet Aung gazes longingly at the girl he wants to marry as she passes the charcoal shop where he works: she’s on her way to school and he’s busy sorting bags of coal and selling them to local families. After a long day he scrubs the black grime off his body and strolls past her house, hoping to catch a glimpse of the girl of his dreams.

Biography

Maung Okkar’s film career began at the age of 14 when he starred in Dat-khe, a feature film directed by his father – the celebrated Burmese filmmaker U Wunna. Made during a YFS workshop in 2009, Okkar’s directorial debut Charcoal Boy screened at several international film festivals. He has since made another documentary, this time about Myanmar kickboxing, entitled The Game.
